"Fantastic neonatal team"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Neonatal care

(as a parent/guardian),

The neonatal team have been fantastic from the beginning.

We were given a tour of the unit prior to my c-section at 32weeks. This was very helpful as it prepared us for what to expect when we were able to visit our baby boy. They are very well equipped and reassured us we didn’t need to dash out and panic buy prem clothes.

Initially my baby was very jaundice and he had to have blue light treatment in the incubator. This was hard as I was still recovering from the c-section but wanted to be there for my baby. After a few days the team got us involved in the care of our baby, tube feeding and changing nappies etc. Being my first baby I feel very fortunate to learn how to care for my baby from this very experienced team. At times I was given so much advice from different people the information began to conflict and felt this was confusing but when I explained my confusion I was guided by the team to make an informed decision that was right for me and baby.

During the 4weeks I was ill and not getting better and therefore made the decision I no longer wanted to breastpump. I was concerned I was going to be advised otherwise but everyone in the team was very understanding and told me to do what was best for me. There were times when I had to go to hospital appointments myself which meant I couldn’t be there for my son. I felt extremely guilty but I was reassured by the nurse and knew I was leaving him in safe hands. This time allowed me to get better so that I could get my baby home sooner.

Whilst we are thrilled to be leaving hospital with our son after 4weeks of being on NICU, we will miss the kind, caring and professional team.Thank you

Thank you so much for telling us about your very challenging journey. How difficult for you all as a family, when both you and your baby were needing care. I am glad to hear that you felt your baby was in safe hands when you had to leave him, but were also able to express when advice seemed to conflict. It is really important to make a decision that is right you, as a family, and each of us is different.

Best of luck at home in the next stage of your journey.
