"Hospital care in the Ulster Hospital 4b and 3b"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Ward 3B The Ulster Hospital / Ward 4B

(as the patient),

Just out of hospital after 5 days with clots on my lungs. First time ever in hospital and hope it’s my last.  What can I say hear people raving about single rooms en-suite unfortunately think it lends itself to isolation and being forgotten about.

When did nurses stop asking people how are you today? Or talking to patients? Often felt they just went through the motions like I was robot and they had to ask same questions even though my wrist band was clearly displayed. After being administered intravenous drugs, staff would often not come back. I would wait until I needed the bathroom and then have to buzz. This was a regular occurrence during the night.  One Nurse asked me how I was feeling during the 5 days ? I said to her you are the first to ask she said that’s a bit worrying  No one commented or asked why I didn’t sleep in my bed?
I still couldn’t explain eating times, breakfast 9.30 lunch whenever and tea very sporadic often lunchtime plates left all day.  Water replaced once and the tea served up as though they cleaned the dishcloth in it, this is in an establishment, that has ill, vulnerable people reliant on those providing the service to actually care.  No ownership, no responsibility and no clear management.  I was one of the lucky ones who could pack my bag when told to move by myself did anyone ask if I needed help? No.
The food was served cold on the Sunday evening and on the Tuesday some issue on a different ward with hot and cold.  Food I would want better food and probably more choice.  Very little nutrition, no salads no fruit repetitive boring and extremely small portions. One slice of toast that could of bounced from dundonald to Bangor, warm orange juice best part of any meal cake and custard.

Dear Rockett, thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts about your recent stay in hospital. We are always grateful to receive comments, positive or negative, so we can learn and make improvements.

I am very sorry to hear that you felt isolated and alone.Your experience is not what I would expect in our wards. The single rooms have many benefits but I understand how you could feel lonely, without others to chat to. I will be sharing your comments at our next ward sisters meeting to ask staff to be more mindful of how isolating the single rooms can be.

Thanks again for your post, I hope you are feeling better and wish you well in your recovery.
