I presented myself to the Emergency Department at Croydon University Hospital London. Totally unrelated to HIV. They gave me a work up of a number of medical diagnostics. And one of them was for bloods. Unknown to me, at the time. I was being tested for HIV. When I realised after my bloods were taken. I spoke to the Doctor, later on, to find out if their colleague tested me for HIV, and to my shock and horror, they did.
I requested to have the HIV test cancelled straight away. Which the Doctor said he would cancel test. I was not consented for, this HIV test, in line with GMC Consenting Principles, The Royal College of Emergency Medicine and the British HIV Association. The test was carried out unlawfully. The medical professional did not seek my verbal consent. I was not made aware at the time verbally, that an HIV test was being carried out. I am still mortified, as I am HIV positive and do not want my status to be on my hospital records. That is my choice and my right. That is between me and HIV clinic. To be outed in such a way is despicable and deplorable!
I was so lucky that I did realise before it was to late to get the test cancelled. What would they have done. If the HIV test went through and my positive HIV result ended up on my hospital records. And this was done unlawfully!
