"Care with kindness and empathy"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Acute Stroke Unit

(as a relative),

My granny was admitted to RVH ward 6F following a stroke and unfortunately passed away over a week later. The care she received from the all the staff was exceptional. They ensured she felt safe, pain free and comfortable. In addition to this they provided so much care and support to our family during a very difficult time. Covid restrictions were in place which  limited visiting, however every staff member approached us with kindness and empathy to explain this and provided support. Dr Gordon and her team of doctors were very supportive and explained everything well and at every opportunity checked in with the family. Every single nurse wether it was night shift or day shift were fantastic and so caring. I would also like to say thank you to Mary who cleaned my granny’s room daily and provided support to myself and my family by being so kind. I am so grateful my granny was cared for at 6F in her final days

My name is Margaret Devlin and I am the service Manager for the stroke service. Firstly can I offer my condolence on the loss of your grandmother. Grandmother have a very significant impact on our lives and the loss of our grandmothers is always greatly felt. Thanks you for taking the time to send through such lovely comments on the care your grandmother received at such a difficult time for you all.

The visiting restriction are very difficult for families and while we try to ensure that families are keep up to date, actual visiting is important for both the patients and their loved ones. So I'm glad that you were given enough information and were treated well. I have shared your post with Dr Gordon and the team. It really helps us to know what we are doing right but equally what we can improve.

Once again thankyou for taking the time to write and I hope you and your family recover from the loss of your grandmother.
