"Blood test results"

About: Newport Surgery

(as a service user),

When I have blood tests with my GP they often come back highlighted in red with exclamation marks beside them but also marked ‘no action required’.  On one of these blood tests recently, the creatinine level was 97.  Underneath in faint print was the statement ‘this is indicative of stage 3 kidney disease’ .  My doctor had told me that all my tests were normal.

On the same blood panels was a TSH Thyroid test. I have hypothyroidism and have a test at least once yearly.  The test result was highlighted in red and exclamation marked.  I ask for printouts of my results as I have had previous experience of Doctors not advising me correctly.  According to this test result I was just out of the normal range and was possibly taking too much levothyroxine.  Anyone with experience of a thyroid condition may be aware that this can cause problems such as sleeplessness, weight loss, and hyperactivity as well as fast heart rhythms. If not addressed with advise to the patient about dosage these symptoms can become worse along with further imbalance of the thyroid function.

In respect of the kidney/creatinine results, advice should be given to the patient about fluid intake and excessive red meat consumption, as both dehydration (I am often too busy to think about having a glass of water) and diet can make a big difference to kidney function.  Why do my Doctors so rarely pick up on these things when catching something early can make such a big difference.
