In June I was in a road accident whilst travelling along the A75 following a wonderful holiday in Dumfries and Galloway. I was driving a motor home and although I don’t exactly remember all the details I swerved to avoid a vehicle, resulting in a collision with another vehicle and the motor home overturned on the road. My partner, in the passenger seat was able to get out but I was trapped and had to be rescued by the emergency services and was brought to Dumfries and Galloway hospital.
I cannot thank enough the emergency services and the staff at the hospital who undoubtedly saved my life. There are no words, how do you thank these marvellous people, there is no way to do so.
Following my assessment when I was brought into the hospital I was told that I had multiple fractures of my right leg including an open fracture and serious skin and soft tissue damage on both legs and would be needing surgery. There was talk of sending me to Glasgow but in the end the decision was made to keep me in Dumfries. The following day I had the surgery, an 8 hour operation after which I was taken to the orthopaedic ward. Unfortunately I do not know the name of the surgeon, or surgeons, who operated. All I can say is that right from the very first moments I was treated with the utmost care, attention and kindness by everyone who supported me. I felt I was in a very safe environment. Visits from my consultant, physio, occupational therapists, kept me informed throughout of what was happening. The nursing and healthcare support staff could not be faulted, they were attentive, patient and kind and in spite of my embarrassment at my dependency on them for all my personal needs they protected my dignity at all times. And the food was good too!
Also, the hospital were very kind to my partner who was in Dumfries with me with nowhere to stay and the motorhome unusable. They recommended a hotel and allowed him to spend much time at my bedside.
After two weeks I was transferred to my home town of stoke on Trent in Staffordshire where I remained in hospital for a further week. I am now continuing my recovery as an outpatient of the fracture clinic and the physio department, it is a long job, but I’m led to believe I shall make a good recovery.
I cannot thank everyone enough, how do you? If this information could be passed on to all and any staff involved I would be most grateful. And Dumfries and Galloway is a lovely part of the world, I hope to return at some point in the not too distant future.
