"Confused about my pregnancy care! "

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

So I am now approaching 36 weeks pregnant. I have had a very mixed experience with this hospital. When I first found out I was pregnant I had a an early private scan who gave me one due date and then at the 12 week scan at this hospital they told me a different due date ..5 days difference. Anyway they told me they would put both on the paperwork but go by the earlier date. My community midwife has also been going by this date. Only when I went for my 36 week scan it was brought to my attention that we should have all been going by the later due date. Why has this only just been flagged up?

Plus, I have needed additional antenatal clinic appointments due to health conditions, and every time I have seen them something new gets told to me that everyone else seems to have known except me. I feel a little lost in my pregnancy to be honest.

As well as this, my scans haven’t been the best experience. My 12 week scan was amazing, the woman went into so much detail about what she could see on the screen and it was fantastic. However I had blood tests done and was offered either to wait for results or have them posted to me. I chose to wait, but waited for 2 hours to then be told I had been forgotten about. I brushed this off at the time.

My 20 week scan wasn’t very detailed. The woman didn’t really tell us much , the photos weren’t as clear as the previous scan, but we got told baby was fine and all was good.

My 36 week scan was absolutely awful! The woman huffed and puffed through it, looked very fidgety in her chair, didn’t say a single word to us through the scan, and we couldn’t see anything at all on the screen. When we asked if everything was ok she had attitude with us. I got given the paper work and I began reading through it so I could see what she just did as she didn’t explain anything to me. she said very abruptly ‘you can go now’. I walked out of there crying and confused. someone saw us upset and helped us , we got someone else to rescan us and explain to us what she was doing. She pointed out why the image wasn’t clear, baby was in the right position for birth, but facing my back therefore we couldn’t see much more than her spine really. Which was fine cos at least she was getting in the right position for birth! We were told the weight of the baby etc and the woman was so kind through it all.

So to sum up my experience, it’s been a rollercoaster. I am really really hoping that when I have this baby the hospital will be a bit better, more helpful and all I ask is that they communicate better with me. I’ve heard mixed reviews about this hospital and seeing as this is my first baby and I don’t know what to expect at each appointment, I was hoping the staff would guide me along my pregnancy journey.

This is just my personal experience ,but I have heard similar stories to mine.

I can only hope that my baby and I are going to be well looked after through labour and birth.

We are so sorry to hear that your maternity care to date has been described as inconsistent, this is not the service we aspire to and we would like to hear more about your poor experience and discuss how we can put this right.

We would welcome the opportunity to contact you, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) and provide your name and contact details. The PALS Team can be contacted on medwayft.pals@nhs.net.

Best wishes,

The Patient Experience Team
