"I was admitted with Covid 19"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Craigavon Area Hospital / General Medicine (2 south) Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Non-emergency control

(as a service user),

I was admitted to A&E. An assessor called to my home first before requesting an ambulance. The assessor cared for me until the ambulance arrived. I had called 999 earlier in the week but the assessor said I did not need to be admitted even though I felt I should have been. I was unable to leave my bed due to low oxygen levels so my daughter called ambulance on Saturday. The non-emergency ambulance was in another area so I had to wait 90 minutes before it arrived. Once I arrived in A&E I was seen within 30 minutes and given my own room. A&E was very busy and I was ignored and I had to keep making requests such as a blanket or a cup of tea/water.

I was admitted to 2 south and really impressed with how caring and gentle the staff are. The staff keep me informed on my treatment and even wrote my medication on a piece of paper so I can tell my daughter who is a nurse at another hospital. I am 100% happy with the care provided and the food is great quality, it just like being in a hotel.

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story via care opinion.

I am sorry to see you felt ignored in ED, unfortunately we have been under immense pressure due to the pandemic. It is reassuring to see however that you were assessed within 30 minutes. It sounds like you defiantly needed a trip to the hospital.

I wish you well with your recovery.

Kind Regards,

Lisa

Dear guidebb55

Thank you for your comments surrounding your need for an ambulance.

I would like to offer you a short explanation which might help clarify how clinical decisions are arrived at. During your initial call a clinician would have taken a full medical history from you and following a very strict set of guidelines the decision for an ambulance to the Emergency Department is made. This in turn would then indicate if there is a medical necessity to be transported to the Emergency Department.

Whilst a set of astringent protocols are used, sometimes things medically with the patient, are not quite as they seem and I understand and apologise for any frustration caused by the delay in our response.

I hope you are feeling a great deal better and enjoy a full and speedy recovery.

Take care

Amanda
