"Unhappy with sharing bathroom"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 1 East Gynaecology Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I am currently receiving chemo treatment so when I arrived at A&E the nursing staff gave me a private room straight away as my immune system weak. I did have to move out of that room for a Covid-19 positive patient but the nurses ensured that my curtains in the bay were pulled to protect me. I was in A&E for  about 12 hours as I had to wait to get a bed in the ward. The staff in A&E were lovely and looked after me well. I did have a long wait for a bed in the ward but that was out of the nurses control.

The staff in 1 East are cheerful and have created a calming atmosphere within the ward. All staff from domestics, catering, porters, HCA, Nurses, Physio, Doctors are amazing and take the time to get to know me as a person and not just my wants or needs. The doctors and nurses are good at clarifying my treatment and very accommodating to my needs. I am fortunate to have my own room within the ward but my bathroom is interlinked with another bedroom and I think that sharing a bathroom in the 21st century is inappropriate especially a female sharing with a male but this is out of the nurse’s control. I feel that this objectifies my dignity.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

I am delighted to read that you felt the staff on 1East were cheerful and made you feel at ease and your needs were met.

I do appreciate and take on board your concerns regarding mixed sex bathrooms. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, 1east has temporarily been used as a medical ward as opposed to its traditional gynae ward and due to bedding pressures within the hospital, unfortunately this occasionally results in males and females within the same ward. It is hoped the frequency of this will reduce as our service builds back to normality following the pandemic.

regards
