"Disappointment at ultrasound"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Early Pregnancy Assessment Service University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as the patient),

I had to attend EPAS for 3 early scans due to a possible ectopic pregnancy, the service I received initially at another hospital was fantastic, the staff there were so understanding with me and mindful of the situation and I never felt rushed and could ask any questions without feeling like a hassle. Thankfully baby all ok. Thank you for the team at UH Wishaw EPAS.

Fast forward to my 12 week scan - this time appointed to UH Hairmyres. Understandably anxious about the appointment. Very disappointed after a very painful and upsetting appointment. Baby wasn’t in the best position and bladder not full enough - was never given the option to go away and come back etc. Didn’t feel very reassured and felt my questions and upset were ignored. We left feeling very deflated.

Discussed this with my midwife who then got a senior staff member to call me (3 times, with the same outcome). It was deemed a clash in personalities, apparently, which was so upsetting to hear. No option of a repeat scan for reassurance on our part.

Left me feeling very upset and concerned regarding the same outcome at 20 week scan. Felt the call was more to let me know that the staff member was upset that I had called and not that I had a disappointing experience.

I have since asked for further scans to be completed at UH Wishaw where I feel a larger team will be around for “second opinions” and to avoid having the same sonographer where possible.

I understand NHS scans are to check all ok with baby and we are limited to 12 weeks and 20 weeks, however I just feel that considering I have had 9 weeks of hyperemesis, a possible ecptopic pregnancy and a lot of anxiety if the baby is ok - it could’ve been handled in a more sympathetic way.

Dear Lst21,

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Firstly I will pass on your positive comments to our Early Pregnancy Department.

I am sorry to hear that your 12 week scan did not meet your expectations and that you felt upset and disappointed. At times it can be difficult obtaining an abdominal scan at 12 weeks. However, if the sonographer was in any doubt of her findings she would have asked for a second opinion. I can only apologise if you felt deflated and the sonographer was not being sympathetic to your situation.

If you wish to speak to your Midwife or contact myself I will ensure your USS at 20 weeks is carried out at University Hospital Wishaw, where as you say there is a larger team available.

I will also pass on your experience to the USS department, we value all feedback and will use this to improve our service.

Kind Regards

Heather Weir
