I had to be in hospital for my operation at 7am in the morning, but I was just waiting around until 12 midday for the actual operation. Communication could have been better here.

After my op I was placed on the Rowan Ward. It was very busy indeed. The nurses are terrific, seemingly overworked, rushed off their feet and not enough of them, but I can't fault the nurses at all.

The food however was deplorable. I was in hosital on the 20th July 2006 and the weather was very hot, but there is no excuse for bringing out "cold sandwiches" that were hot! I suggest that they use some kind of cooler and ice for your water jug. The ward could also do with air conditioning as the fans weren't very effective.

The cleaners came round every morning with a mop, the floors were clean but there was no dusting on the beds or shelves etc.

The consultant came round and visited twice which I was happy with.

Finally the curtain around my bed wasn't long enough.

Thank you for sending your comments to us regarding the treatment and care you received while at NGH.

From your explanation it would appear that you were listed to have your operation during the morning. The morning operating lists run from 8.30-12.30 and all patients who are on this list need to be admitted prior to the list starting to ensure they are prepared for theatre and available for the Dr to see prior to their operation.

This should have been explained to you if you attended a pre-admission clinic or, if not, when you came to the unit 1st thing in the morning.

It is also very difficult to predict the exact time that you would be going to theatre in the morning as each patient’s treatment and operation will vary in time. There are also times when the list has to be rearranged at short notice.

With regard to the condition of the food when it arrived I do apologise and have passed your comments on to the catering department, we do ask patients to inform staff immediately if food is not of an acceptable standard so that the catering department can deal with the problem at the time.

We have taken note of your comments regarding air conditioning and where possible air conditioning is installed and will be available on new wards as they are built in the future.

We would like to reassure you that the wards have a cleaning schedule that is checked and signed each week by the ward sister. In addition to this we are now having ward spot checks done by our Modern Matron’s to review ward cleanliness.

I have passed your positive comments on to the staff on Rowan ward who greatly appreciate them.
