"Waiting and forgotten"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Dermatology

(as the patient),

I have been suffering with severe eye eczema for 2.5 years. I had an initial appointment with the dermatology dept at Crosshouse in Jan 2019. There I was tested for pet allergies (and never received the result - but was told when I called it was “probably negative” my gp never received a result or record of this either. I was told I would be given a patch test at this time. I have now been suffering near constantly since and I have heard absolutely nothing since. Even my gp has tried in vain to chase this up.

I have tried everything to work out the triggers myself but I don’t know if it is eczema or allergies. I have no history of eczema beyond the last 3 years and no asthma.

I have chased the department several times but understand COVID is holding things back - but I’m not sure how much longer I can suffer this with absolutely no contact, support or indication of waiting list timescale.

I’m extremely upset with the care received if it could be called that and don’t want to be putting steroids on my eyes for extended periods of time because I still haven’t been seen.

Dear Lailyh

I am sorry to hear of your experience and firstly want to apologise both for the lack of follow up and support but also for not getting your results.

You are correct that Covid has had a huge impact on our service as staff, both medical and nursing, were redeployed to ensure safe care for those requiring hospitalisation during the pandemic and the knock on effect has been that patients have been left waiting much longer than anyone could have anticipated.

There continues to be ongoing challenges and pressures within the NHS due to Covid, but please be reassurred that as a team we are working hard to get our service re-established, although due to the restrictions in place such as social distancing, the number of patients being seen has been greatly reduced.

I understand your concern for using topical steroid for extended periods and also your frustration at not knowing when you are going to be reviewed.

I would be grateful if you could make contact so that I can get further details and at least let you know your results, please call me on 01563 827923.

Kindest regards

Sandra
