I was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in March via a&e for suspected appendicitis. Blood tests confirmed I did have some form of infection (raised CRP). I was kept in overnight with a CT scan happening in the early hours of the morning. In morning rounds the doctor said he wanted to do more blood tests before deciding on what to do, this was probably around 8am.
After having blood taken, I hadn't seen the doctor or been told anything by the nurses for quite some time. At about 2pm I asked a nurse what was happening with my care. She went to check my notes and came back to tell me I had been cleared for discharge since 9am. So I had been sat in a hospital bed for 5 hours apparently having been discharged. She handed me my discharge papers which did seem to confirm I had been diagnosed with appendicitis but I hadn't been prescribed anything, no antibiotics and no painkillers. I was not seen by a doctor before being discharged and the one who ordered more tests in the morning did not explain any diagnosis to me.
I left the hospital feeling confused, anxious and unsure if a mistake had been made and I should have been prescribed some antibiotics as I had been at a previous time last year, also for appendicitis. Thankfully the pain did clear up after two very anxious days, I very nearly returned to A&E during that time to make sure a mistake hadn't been made.
I thought it was standard to be seen by a doctor before discharge who will explain your diagnosis and course of action to you but this did not happen in this instance and left me very confused and worried.
