"My experience of the trauma ward and A&E department"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Craigavon Area Hospital / Trauma Ward

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have been in hospital for about a fortnight. I came in via A&E in immense pain and service was extremely slow. Thankfully during my long wait I was offered pain relief which eased the pain a little but I was still feeling very left in the dark as communication between myself and the staff was little to none during this time. I was anxious to get to the bottom of what was causing me this pain. The environment down in A&E is not pleasant at all in my opinion, and being surrounded by others in immense pain doesn't make your own pain any better. Additionally at times I felt a safety risk in the A&E department as the police presence wasn't even enough to calm the other patients who were also waiting. When I eventually got in to be treated the staff couldn't do enough for me. One nurse in particular was extremely apologetic due to my long wait. The staff began to inform me of what they were going to do for my pain as well as what scans they could offer me to get to the bottom of its cause. The staff were able to reassure me and make me feel less anxious as I waited for scan results.

After an operation, I am now still in hospital and being observed during my recovery. I feel much better now and am grateful for the care I have received over the last two weeks. The staff on the trauma ward have been so good to me and have made sure I am comfortable in my recovery. I am now getting scheduled pain relief to manage my pain. The hospital is very clean and I  think the domestic staff deserve lots of credit for this. Shower and toilet facilities are also extremely good. I feel safe on this ward and staff do everything they can to meet my needs, even at night they keep a dim light on as I can't sleep without one. Additionally if I am too cold they offer me extra blankets.

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story via care opinion.

I am sorry to hear you had a very long wait in our ever busy emergency department, however I am glad you were given pain relief to make you a little more comfortable. I regret to read that you felt uninformed from staff whilst in the waiting area, I will be sure to share this with the staff to raise awareness of the impact this can have.

Unfortunately, the nature of our department we cater for a large variety of patients and on occasions this leads to unpleasant situations that require assistance from our PSNI colleagues. Patients who are escorted by PSNI do not get a fast card through ED so therefore they have to share the same waiting area. On all occasions patients are triaged according to clinical need, however the safety of the waiting area should be considered at all times and I regret to read you felt unsafe in our department.

It is heartwarming to read that once you got into a clinical area the staff were apologetic and provided you with a high standard of care. Thank you for your kind words.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Kind regards

Lisa

Thank you for the lovely feedback on our Trauma ward and team. This will be very well received. We are glad to hear that you found the staff helpful and you feel safe on the ward. The domestic staff are an intricate part of the team and we couldn't provide this service without them. We hope you continue to recover well.
