"Diabetes Centre"

About: Western General Hospital / Endocrinology

(as the patient),

Since the beginning of the pandemic, appointments have moved to a phone call instead of face to face. This was ok during the pandemic when no vaccines were available and I was willing to forgive the phone call over a bad line.  However I felt  the doctor could care less about my health and just wanted it to be over. I timed my last appointment at 6 minutes.

Since my last appointment, I and many many others have now been double jabbed and I was hoping that I would be able to see the doctor in person again. My latest 6-month check up appointment was moved from face to face to being back on the phone. So I will have missed two years of HB1C tests, foot check ups and general friendly chats about my health that I really appreciated.

I don't understand the change here - should I expect my health to be monitored remotely? Is face to face is the reserve of the few? What is health care without personality? Why should I even bother to pick up the phone when I get the call when I expect a disinterested doctor calling me because it's their job to and hurry to hang up to get to the next person.

Thank you for sharing your experience of a recent phone consultation. We are sorry your experience has fallen short of the standard we would like to deliver. Unfortunately due to the ongoing pandemic we continue to have to deliver outpatient care differently.

If you would like to discuss this further with us please contact the patient experience team on 0131 536 3370 or feedback@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk
