"I came through A&E to the Trauma Ward"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Craigavon Area Hospital / Trauma Ward

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Nurses on this ward are totally overworked but yet they still meet the patients with a smile.  It means so much as a patient and allows the patient to have confidence in that nurse.  They are so drained but still take the time to listen to me and explain everything well which is so lovely.  Leigh the nurse is amazing.  I can tell that she is tired and stressed but she still gives it her everything and remains totally professional.  Yesterday and today she has so many patients to manage with no one helping her at all and she is doing an absolutely amazing job.

A member of staff made me feel disgusted when they shouted across the ward some totally inappropriate comments to a domestic who was doing their job very well.  This was totally inappropriate and it made me as a patient feel so upset as this person was so lovely and is so caring.  No one should be spoken to like that.  The same Member of staff is on the cool side when treating patients and should really consider the way they act.

I have dislocated my elbow in 3 places and they had tried to realign my bones 3 times but failed.  I was brought into surgery and they realigned them eventually but I could feel that my bones were still out of line.  I know my own body and this turned out to be correct.  I have a high pain threshold but this has been agony.  The consultant came to see me yesterday and was so dismissive and said as they were walking away, that someone is very hypersensitive to pain.  This really upset me and other patients heard this aswell.  I made sure to have a conversation with another doctor about this as I was not happy.
The food in this hospital is alright but I wish they did sandwiches and more fresh fruit.  We also need a wider choice of vegetables on the menu.  I wish there was cheese on the menu.  It would be lovely to have some cheese on crackers or cheese on wheaten as a light snack.
I wanted to see an OT or someone from the social care field as I feel like I really need a care package when going home as I have broken ribs and a severely dislocated elbow so I can't manage things myself and I live on my own.  I would just love for someone to be able to come in and wash me in the mornings so that I feel clean.  I said I didn't mind if there was no one there to help me at night time.  This has not been organised and they are trying to make me go home.
I came through A&E and the abuse that those nurses get from some people is hateful.  I couldn't bear to watch it.  They are so brave.
Thank you to all of the staff in this hospital that do an incredible job despite the pressures they are facing day to day.

Hi,

Thank you for sharing your story via care opinion.

I would like to thank you for the kind words in regards to the Emergency Department. Our staff are open to a variety of situations and unfortunately, sometimes that involves some unpleasant situations,

Our staff are all fantastic at managing these situations, even through the pressures of the department. We try to minimize the stress to the other patients and indeed the staff as far as possible.

I wish you a speedy recovery and hope that the ward can accommodate some social support for you on discharge.

Kind regards

Lisa

Thank you for posting regarding your recent hospital stay.

I am saddened to read that a member of my staff was spoken to inappropriately, our Domestic Services staff work very hard to maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.

The catering team have received feedback regarding snack options and these have now been added to the menu. Unfortunately we cannot provide sandwiches for food safety reasons, our menus are reviewed regularly to ensure we offer variety.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Many thanks

Andrew
