"Left a long time in A&E"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Acute Medical Unit (AMU) Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I was taken into hospital on Thursday night by a family member after feeling pains in my chest. As someone who is prone to clots I knew this was another one. Although the staff were all really good especially the receptionist, I felt I wasn't being taken seriously enough.

I felt the staff members were failing to listen to me and I felt my opinion was unvalued. I knew what was wrong with me and it was an urgent situation and yet I was told to wait and they would see me as soon as they could. I waited for 4 hours in immense pain and was left alone without any pain relief. When I was eventually seen the nursing and medical staff were outstanding and made sure I was comfortable and informed.

After they concluded this was an emergency I wasn't waiting long at all to receive the care I needed but as I keep saying I'm very grateful this wasn't a travelling clot as if it was I fear the outcome could have been much worse.

Now on AMU ward I am being looked after so well. All my questions are answered and I feel safe in the care of those looking after me. I cant suggest any improvements and just hope I get home soon. I just wish I was listened to more in A& E.

Good evening,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story via care opinion.

Thank you for the kind words about the staff in the Emergency Department. I would like to apologize for the long wait you had to endure, especially without the offer of pain relief to make this wait a little more bearable. My colleagues are under immense pressure during these challenging times, however we should have been able to minimize your discomfort.

I apologize you felt you were not being listened to by the ED team, I will be sure to share this story with them to improve patients experiences, even when the department is extremely busy.

I hope you continue to improve in AMU and get home soon.

Kind Regards

Lisa
