"My experience in A&E and trauma ward of CAH"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have been in hospital now since last week. I was taken in via ambulance after a low blood pressure and soaring temperature. Thankfully the ambulance arrived at my house within the space of 5 minutes and from what I remember they made me so comfortable and reassured me that they would get me the help I needed. I knew straight away I was in safe hands.

My condition deteriorated in the ambulance and on arrival to CAH I was taken to resuss where I stayed for 2 days. Down there I received the best treatment I feel was available to me and the way I am told they handled the situation couldn't have been any better. After those 2 days I was brought up to the trauma ward  and a doctor explained to me that I had started becoming septic on admission although my condition was now stabilized I  needed to be monitored for the next while as I am needing IV antibiotics.

I was so grateful that the doctor communicated this to me and gave me a chance to ask questions as it meant I was informed but also listened to. This chat with the doctor reassured me. I feel the nursing staff on this ward are so facilitating and skilled in their work as I know I am a very complex patient with multiple illnesses existing together, I trust the medical and nursing teams to deal with these all as a whole and know  I'm receiving the best possible care I can get.

One thing I would suggest an improvement on is the food, more specifically the lack of fresh produce we receive. Other than that I think the hospital and staff are doing more than enough with me and I can tell I am improving everyday with the care I am receiving.
