"Unpleasant environment"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Acute Receiving Unit (Units 1-5)

(as a relative),

The acute receiving unit is quite frankly appalling. What is alarming is that the staff appear to be aware of this, and have repeatedly raised it and nothing has been done.

My mother was stuck there for 36+ hours in a white bleak room with no radio/TV, no other forms of stimulation, no natural light and no air.  Her only available activity was counting ceiling tiles.  The corridors too are dark and dingy.

If these units are going to be used for longer periods of time than was initially envisaged, surely it's about time resources are invested to make it a slightly more pleasant environment for the souls stuck there for hours?

Dear Noimagination

Thank you for getting in touch.

I am sorry that you were disappointed with the Acute Receiving Unit. As an acute receiving area, the usual process is that patients are here for a relatively short period of time, prior either to discharge or admission to a hospital bed. At the moment we have had a high number of patients being admitted to hospital which means that patients are in the area for longer whilst awaiting a bed in the hospital to become available or for tests and reviews prior to discharge. We know that it can be frustrating being in a single room without any televisions, and we would encourage family to drop off magazines and newspapers. I am not aware of any reports of the lighting but we will discuss the issues you have raised at our Team meeting to see how we can make the environment more pleasant for patients.

I hope your Mother is feeling better.

Kind Regards

Sally Baird
