"Painful hysteroscopy"

About: St Michael's Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

5weeks ago I had an outpatient hysteroscopy, polypectomy and biopsies taken. At no point was I asked if I would like pain relief of anaesthetic (despite being told at a previous hospital I would be given anaesthetic) this one I was rushed through and told I wouldn’t need it, that at worst I would feel some bad period cramping (which I’m used to.)

I also felt pressured into signing consent to have a coil fitted, but was not given information or time. (They couldn’t do it in the end anyway.)

The procedure of the hysteroscopy was painful, the polypectomy attempt was absolutely beyond excrutiating, I have a high pain threshold but I was making noises that I couldn’t control, and tears were streaming down my face. They stopped that part of it after trying, and then said they needed to take the biopsies and use another technique. They didn’t then tell me what they were doing to me so I had to ask a nurse what was happening.

I have never felt so violated and degraded in my life, and ever since I’ve been having flashbacks.

I was told the ‘after’ cramping would settle really soon, but I was in terrible pain for 5days afterwards, and bleeding fairly heavily.

I was then taken to a room and given a cup of tea, and left alone. No one checked on me, despite me being in shock. My carer took me home.

I had to go back and have the procedure done again, only under general anaesthetic which was a much better experience.

This outpatient procedure felt utterly barbaric, and shouldn’t be happening to women in this day and age. The whole experience was rushed, and pressured.
