"Pulsating tinnitus"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

When I developed pulsating tinnitus, over a year ago,

I felt depressed and helpless. There was nothing I could do to get away from the constant pounding and whooshing noises in my ear. I couldn’t sleep and I couldn’t hear what people said to me. I couldn’t concentrate on anything else.

My GP referred me to Hairmyers hospital, where I had an MRI scan on my ears and a hearing test. As a result, I was given a video consultation with an Audiologist, in January this year.

The moment I first spoke to Ms. Lyndon, the Chief Audiologist at Audiology Services, I felt reassured. She was patient, understanding and professional. She understood what was happening to me and how I was feeling. She was calm and empathetic.

She explained my condition, gave me so much help on how to deal with it, and hope that maybe I wouldn’t suffer with it for the rest of my life!

I was sent a pair of hearing aids, with easy to understand instructions on how to use them. After following Ms. Lyndons advice, by my second video consultation, in April, the tinnitus was completely under control. It was still there if I became to anxious, but I hardly noticed it anymore.

Ms Lyndon was encouraging and positive. She gave me more advice and another follow up appointment, which I had today. In the four months since I had last spoken to her, I have had only one “attack” of tinnitus! Ms Lyndon has discharged me, with the assurance that I can get in touch with her if I need to.

I cannot say enough in praise of the Tinnitus Clinic. Not only is the tinnitus a thing of the past , but also my anxiety levels are lower and my self confidence higher. The way I was dealt with was so positive, so encouraging! I felt that I really mattered.

Thank you so much NHS Lanarkshire, especially Ms Lyndon.
