"If you're old, don't waste my time..."

About: General practices in Forth Valley

(as a carer),

Elderly father with dementia visited by local GP (part of a local practice). Dad is feeling very tired and breathless and is clearly distressed and looking for reassurance.

This GP breezed in (as witnessed by dad's care manager and carer), looked at Dad and when asked what the bottom line was, said, "you're old" and turned on his heel and walked out saying he had other people to see.

No kindness, no reassurance, no effort to see whether the situation could be improved. This would be bad enough for any patient, but for a vulnerable elderly one who is clearly scared and confused, it's appalling.

Dear Hopalong Leith

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch to tell us about your dads visit from the GP. I really am sorry that the experience wasn't a more positive and reassuring one, this is not the level of care we expect for our patients. Can I please ask you to pass on my most sincere apologies to your dad.

I really would like to share your feedback with the GP Practice, but for me to be able to do this I need a little more information, can I ask you to get in touch with me. You can contact me on 01324 566523 or you can email me pauline.donnelly@nhs.scot

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kindest regards

Pauline
