"Waiting at the hospital"

About: Udston Hospital

(as a service user),

As per the instructions on our appointment letter, we waited in our car and called the reception office to let them know we had arrived for our appointment. We were early and had to wait in the car.

As we waited we saw hospital staff members leave to go home in full uniform. I thought during the pandemic this was not allowed. We saw other staff do the same, but we know the district nursing service is housed there, so they may have been district staff. However they normally use another car park.

We were finally told to go inside and wait at what had been a cafe area to the left of the main door.

We saw someone come in with a child in a car seat and tell the receptionist the baby had to have an eye swab take. This was around 1 pm. A staff member came through the door opposite the reception and told them to put the car seat on the table. They both touched the table several times. Then the staff member, without any gloves on took a swab from the baby’s eyes. Put the swab in the charcoal container, gave them their instructions and left.

I assume this was a member of clinical staff, but from what we saw they never washed their hands before or after taking the swab. Gloves were not worn, and the table was never cleaned while we were there.

It seems there are better hygiene levels in fast food restaurants. Then the cherry on the cake was seeing another staff member leave to go home in full uniform.

Dear Team Orlando.

Many thanks for your post. I am sorry to hear that you feel let down by what you witnessed in relation to uniform policy and cleanliness.

The staff based in the hospital are a mixture of community based and hospital based staff. They will use different entry and exit points based on where their service is situated and/or delivered in the building. However all staff are expected to comply with NHS Dress Code and Appearance at Work, Including National Uniform, Policy and I will highlight this to all staff based in the hospital site.

Hand hygiene is essential at all times and staff are expected to comply with the relevant hand hygiene and infection control procedures at all key points when providing clinical care. I would like to investigate this matter further, therefore may I ask you contact our patient affairs team via email or telephone at the following - PatientAffairs.Primarycare@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or 01698 752 800 (Press Option 2)

Kind regards,

Stewart

Update posted by Team Orlando (a service user)

I have contacted community patient affairs and no one got back to me. In the meantime we have been back to Udston Hospital, it was a lovely day. We saw 2 staff going to the local shop in their uniform and another staff getting into their cars to go home. They were all in full uniform. The Covid numbers are on the rise in Scotland. Staff should know better.

I have tried several times, using different devices to sent a message and as I have said before I have tried to phone your office.

I just don’t seem to have any luck contacting patient affairs.

I continue to visit Udston Hospital and have again seen staff leaving shift in full uniform.
