"My experience in AMU and A&E in Craigavon Area Hospital"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Acute Medical Unit (AMU) Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I came into A&E yesterday and was surprised as to how positive my experience was. Before coming over to the hospital I was reluctant as I given the current pandemic and recent news of rising cases in the area, I felt maybe I would be at risk if I was to come in. But from I entered the door I felt safe and knew I had come in at the right time to receive the care I needed.

I was very grateful to be seen so quickly by staff and they were constantly comforting and reassuring me they were going to do all they could for me. The longest wait in my whole experience was waiting to get a bed, but I understand the pressures facing the NHS and knew that this wait was expected. I trusted the staff and felt they were highly skilled at what they could do for me, leaving no stone unturned and ordering all tests they seen fit for me. My needs were met by any member of staff I interacted with and at no point did I feel like a burden or a hindrance to the system.

The only thing I could suggest for A&E is the need for more staff. At my point of arrival there seemed to be only 2 nurses running the whole section of A&E I was in. They looked exhausted, more staff would really be required so that certain staff members are under immense pressure.

Now on AMU ward I am very happy. The staff, both nursing and medical, have been fabulous. The ward is clean and hygienic and after making friends with some of the other patients on this ward, I feel like it will be a home from home. I have absolutely nothing negative to report since my arrival on this ward, although a TV remote would be nice as often myself and the other patients are left feeling quite bored in our recovery.

Hi Keeen88,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story, especially while you recover in your hospital bed.

I fully understand your fears and concerns about coming to the hospital, however It is heart warming to hear you felt safe within the care of our ED team and they will be glad to hear your feedback that you felt comforted constantly and reassured.

Although the staff and bed pressures within the hospital are a constant battle, our ED team will be encouraged to know that you put your trust in them in your hour of need and I will make sure to share your story with them.

I hope you continue to recover well in AMU and get discharged to your own home comforts soon.

Kind regards,

Lisa
