"A&E attendance"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

Attended A&E due to my son becoming unwell on a trip away. I phoned ahead to ensure that the hospital was appropriate for paediatrics, and was assured that it was. Waited over 1 to see the triage nurse. The staff member didn’t introduce themself to either myself or my son, and began to check observations - again without speaking to him. I questioned if the waiting time on the board outside was accurate- it had said 5 hours when I first got there, and then changed to 6. 5 hrs. The triage nurse simply laughed and said it probably was.  I appreciate that this seemed like a very busy department, and I am also aware that they are under great stress at the moment. However, these are simple manners which cost nothing.

I decided to drive back home to our nearest hospital where we were triaged, treated, discussed with the surgical team and discharged with antibiotics within 1 hour.

Dear relative63

I would like to apologise to both you and your son for the negative experience you had when you attended our hospital. I will ensure and share your experience with the team and allow them to reflect on this.

The hospital is very busy at present and we are working within the national strategy to improve the experience for patients and encourage all patients who do not have a life threating emergency to call 111 it does not sound like like this was an option offered to you and your son. We are working in forth valley with our Communication team to improve communication around this to prevent patients having these long waits in our department.
