"Pelvic Ultrasound"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

The sonographer pushed very hard on my pelvic area with the wand.  I have had several pelvic ultrasounds before - I am 48 and never been in very good health.  It was not just uncomfortable, it was VERY painful.

The sonographer did not say sorry I'll try to be more gentle, in fact the choice I was given was to carry on the same, or stop.  I said I wanted to find the cause of the ovarian pain I was experiencing.  They continued to push extremely hard into me.  I gritted my teeth, it was obvious I was in pain.  I asked for their name, since I know full well pushing so hard is not necessary.  The sonographer's name badge was flipped over so I could not see.

Eventually they said they would use the vaginal wand, so everything was set up for that, and it was much easier once inserted. The sonographers aim for inserting it was pretty poor though and to say that was ham fisted would be a kindness. Once it was in, it did not hurt.

I am concerned that this person is causing pain to patients.  Overall the procedure felt abusive.
