"Fracture Clinic - no faith"

About: St Michael's Hospital / Trauma & Orthopaedics (including fracture/hand clinic) West Cornwall Hospital (Penzance) / Urgent Treatment Centre

(as the patient),

Had a fall and landed on hand. A few days later on the Thursday I went to Penzance Hospital where I had an x Ray and they said they didn't believe it to be broken but would get another doctor to review results.  They said if I don't hear from them by Friday night it was just damaged tendon and wear the brace they gave me  for a while. I heard nothing until Sunday morning where I got a call from Penzance Hospital telling me I need to return to have another X-ray. So I went back Sunday afternoon. They sent me for an X-ray where I sat for a hour as they forgot about me. When I returned to casualty they said yes it's broken and put me in a plaster. They said fracture clinic in Truro would be in touch. I left hospital 4 hours after arriving

I get to Truro after wearing cast for a week sat in waiting room for 2 hours to finally be seen by doctor. The doctor saw me in less than 5 minutes where said don't know why your here it's not broken!! Cut off cast and I left with another splint even though hand still aches and was told if hurts still in 4 weeks to return

I know they are the specialist and their diagnosis probably right however I honestly don't know who to believe the fracture clinical or casualty. Very frustrated to be honest and just hope my hand does actually heal

Dear Happy thoughts,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you on here. I was saddened to read about your experience at West Cornwall Hospital where there seemed to be some confusion as to whether your hand was broken or not, and that upon returning for another x-ray, you were forgotten.

It is disheartening to see that again you experienced long waiting times in the Fracture Clinic at the Royal Cornwall Hospital only to be told your hand was not broken during your 5 minute consultation. This must have been incredibly frustrating for you.

I can see that you are still in pain with your injury and have been told to contact the Fracture Clinic if you are still experiencing discomfort in 4 weeks time. If you are at all concerned during that 4 week period, please do not hesitate to contact the Patient and Family Experience team using the contact details below to see if a telephone call can be arranged with someone to discuss your injury with you. You can quote this feedback so they have some background information:

Email: rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net

Tel: 01872 252793

In the meantime, I will share your feedback both with West Cornwall Hospital and the Fracture Clinic so they can reflect on your experience and make changes where possible.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story with us.

Best wishes,

Jess
