"Visit to A&E"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My husband has memory problems but I was not allowed to stay with him.

He was discharged without my knowledge and allowed to wander around the car park looking for me. He was inappropriately dressed with no coat, no socks and wearing slippers. This caused him great distress.

As a senior member of healthcare staff with 40 years experience I am very disappointed with the lack of care.

I am sorry that you have had cause to complain about your experience in the Pilgrim Hospital Emergency Department when your husband attended.

Unfortunately, due to current circumstances visiting is suspended at the moment. However, under certain circumstances this is not appropriate and at the nurse in charge discretion visiting is allowed. From your comment, I believe that you should have been allowed to stay with your husband while he was in the department. I am sorry this was not the case when your husband attended.

When discharging patients safety checks are carried out to ensure that patients are being discharged appropriately and are not left to wander outside in the car park alone and inappropriately dressed, this is in no way normal practise for the department. However, it appears from your comment this has happened and I am sorry for that. I can assure you that I will raise this issue with my team and iterate the importance of ensuring the patient’s needs are being met and that communication is clear and concise with regards to visiting and discharging.

I am truly sorry and cannot alter your experience, however I can ensure that our staff learn from it.

Kind Regards

Sam Murray
