My husband, who has dementia, has his dressings changed twice weekly. The surgery is able to do them midweek and it was arranged by Tissue Viability that District nurses would change them at the weekend. I feel that the service provided is very hit and miss with nurses turning up on the correct day sometimes and not others.
The tissue viability nurse arranged for these visits because he needed the dressings changed more often than once a week and therefore Saturday was arranged to be the day it was to be done. I obviously have to be there and so wait in for the the DN, having got the room ready for his legs to be washed and redressed with the dressings I lay out ready. I usually phone to find out if they are coming, and have had various reasons given for them not coming, including a day change to Sunday without our agreement, not being booked in at all and on a couple of occasions phone calls to say they won't come and asking me to rebook.
Whilst I realise that this is an overworked service and maybe sometimes urgent cases take precedence, I think that my husband and other people like him should be able to rely on this service as it is necessary for his legs to be dressed and for him to be as comfortable as possible. Another point I would like to make is that it seems that not everyone looks at his notes either on your computer which are the most up to date, or in the folder before doing his legs. Some nurses don't always want to follow the care plan exactly as far as the type and number of dressings they have to apply.
