"The staff made a stressful experience more positive"

About: Causeway Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

Phoned first regarding my toddler. Staff recommended I come straight down. Triaged very quickly and efficiently by a lovely nurse who really reassured us and was kind and professional. Staff kindly explained only one parent could stay with our son which was absolutely understandable. We then went through to main ED department where we were seen by a nurse in a side room. Again she was kind and efficient. My son was then seen by a Doctor (Zara I think) who clearly explained what they were checking for, interacted really well with my son and attempted to keep him smiling through the tears! She brought him a Teddy which was lovely and showed her warmth towards him. The Dr was really reassuring advising she had consulted with the more senior Dr on who was paeds background too. When we were leaving the triage nurse made a point of saying goodbye and wishing us well which was really lovely. The Dr and triage nurse both reassured us that we had done the right thing by bringing him down which made me feel a lot better as we are all very conscious of the pressure our services are under and it was nice to feel like we weren't wasting their time.

Thank you for making what was a very stressful experience as a parent and toddler much better and positive.

Thank you so much for taking the time to acknowledge the positive experience both you and your toddler had during their attendance to Causeway ED.

I can empathize how worried and anxious you must have been to have to attend ED with an unwell child. Therefore, it is reassuring to hear that your visit was made less stressful by the staff taking time to show their care, compassion and understanding.

It is also encouraging to hear your toddler also had a positive experience, and that the teddy they received gave them some comfort, as if they should ever need to see a Doctor or attend ED again (hopefully not), then they may not be as afraid or anxious and the nurses and doctors are here to help them.

I will ensure this positive feedback is passed onto Dr Zara, and the other staff involved in your toddlers care. Staff have been working through a very challenging time given the demand on our health service, so I know they really are grateful to hear they continue to uphold the HSC Values, and show kindness and care.

I send best wishes to both you and your toddler.

Kind regards

Natalie McLaughlin
