"Distance to available services"

About: Arbroath Infirmary / Cardiology Ninewells Hospital / Cardiology Stracathro Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I needed to get a cardiac appointment and I live in Forfar - there were none available at Ninewells, Stracathro or Arbroath due to COVID 19 restrictions. I am a vulnerable person, suffer from anxiety and cannot take public transport and my dad who usually takes me to the appointments is unwell at moment - I have no confidence in patient transport as once they have not turned up and the other time they turned up at time of my appointment so I would have been late.  So I opted to get a taxi from Forfar to Perth which cost me £120 there and back.

As I am on disability benefits, I got an expenses form and the person I spoke to initially said I should probably get at least half back, but later phoned me to say it was only 13 pence per mile I would get back - I received a payment for £11.00 this week. I feel its riduculous as Perth Royal Infirmary was the only hospital that could do this procedure and to get there has cost me a lot.  Could this be looked into as I am sure there a lot of patients who have to travel from Forfar, Arbroath etc to Perth who really cannot afford this and have to wait again.  I would have waited for another appointment but this was the only place that was carrying out the test I needed.

Dear elephantnt87

Thank you for sharing your experience of your recent cardiac appointment, I am sorry for the unnecessary stress and personal cost this has resulted in.

Generally the location in which an appointment is offered is based upon where the next available appointment is, however if a patient is happy to wait to be seen in alternative location this should be possible. I note you were advised that we were only able to offer appointments in Perth Royal Infirmary due to the COVID19 restrictions and we would be keen to look in to this further to establish exactly what happened with your appointment and to clarify why this was the advise you were given. If you'd like us to do this please can I ask that you share further details with us by e-mailing tay.feedback@nhs.scot.

I am sorry to read your dad is unwell and hope he is beginning to recover.

We look forward from hearing more from you so we can look in to this further.

Kind Regards

Sarah Lowry
