"Very poor practice"

About: Stanley

It's almost impossible to get through on a morning to book appointments which are in limited supply and first come first served (as opposed to triaged). If you don't get an appointment on the day you call, you can't get one for a future date as they don't release new ones till following day.

When I have my regular diabetic review (which they schedule for me), there are usually follow up appointments for blood tests (within the week) with a follow up in 6 weeks (which they can't book in advance because the appointments haven't been released that far out).

On a couple of occasions when I turned up for tests the person assigned was not trained to take blood (for diabetic HBA1C tests). On a couple of other occasions, the blood was put into the wrong kind of tube. Pretty sure I could draw blood myself, squirt it into the right kind of tube and post it off to the labs.

For urgent problems I've been resorting to the King Street walk-in center (who are extremely good and responsive). While they can offer me immediate diagnosis and issue prescriptions, they are not supposed to offer follow on care (which is supposed to be handled by my own GP). How do you do that when your own GP can't/won't see you for weeks at a time?

The only redeeming feature of this practice is that the receptionists are all lovely. Sadly they are hamstrung by the system, but at least they are sympathetic. I would be pretty short tempered by 1pm if I had to tell all my customers "We can't help you today, try calling back tomorrow"

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry you felt you had to report this online and I would have welcomed the opportunity to have discussed this with you in person.

In response I would like to offer the following information: Our appointments are released at 8am each day and we have increased our staff and incoming phone lines to manage the incoming calls at that time. Demand for appointments is extremely high and we utilise all the resources available to us to provide appointments to meet this demand. I am aware it is very busy at 8am and request calls that are not for appointments ring later in the day if possible when the phone lines may be quieter.

Generally we recall patients with diabetes annually, initially to see a Health Care Assistant then, if test results indicate it, a further review would be arranged. Our nursing team will be happy to discuss follow up reviews and how they are scheduled, please ask them at your next appointment.

Our Health Care Assistants are fully qualified in phlebotomy procedures, I am not aware of employing any health care professional who has not been qualified to take blood samples. I would be grateful if you could speak to me directly about this so I can investigate further. I apologise if the wrong tubes have been used when taking your blood sample. The type of tube is printed on the form that is sent with the sample to the laboratory so to hear this has gone wrong on a couple of occasions has caused me some concern, again I would be grateful if you could contact me to discuss this.

Our Reception staff are trained Care Navigators, this means when all available appointments have been booked they can offer information about the many alternative care providers so our patients can make an informed choice that meets their needs. We do offer appointments with the clinical team for reviews, which can be either face to face or by telephone.

Thank you for your positive comments about our Reception staff. They work very hard to help our patients and are here to help. I will be happy to share your comment with the team.
