"Detox experience - Northampton"

About: Substance to Solution

(as a service user),

Within 4 days into my detox my life physically changed completely, my bond with my baby grew and grew and she’s more happy and confident than ever. I’m able to get up and look forward to the day and keeping busy and the best thing about it all was the sweating and shaking stopping as I wouldn’t want to leave the house or do anything because of that. Now I go out all the time. I’m looking forward to my future, but I will be taking it slow. One thing I would say is don’t run before you can walk.

The lows of my detox was on the first day, I found myself emotional and almost mourning alcohol knowing I won’t ever be able to drink again, but that is the mental side of it, each day it gets a little easier but never goes away. I think no matter if you are absolutely fine on your detox and feel good, make sure someone is with you all the time! ! My partner left 3 days before I was finishing and I found it so hard dealing with that, stress of a little one and just being lonely with no one to talk to or encourage you. But the fact how much I wanted it I pushed through but it messes with you. Boredom for me was tricky so I made sure I was doing something everyday as luckily I was able too. I guess everyone is different.

Lastly the only thing I would change is starting the detox earlier In the morning, like 9am because waiting around being anxious, withdrawing almost made me give in. However that might be due to the fact I have a little one who is up at 7am. Other than that I wouldn’t change a thing.

The support from my amazing nurse George, well she felt more like my friend than my nurse getting me through my detox. Always kept in contact even if it was a message checking in on me. The fantastic work from my recovery worker John pushing it through for me, understanding and listening and helping me as well just made it all better, giving me the tools I need and continues to do so.

I just want to say a huge thank you, my journey is just beginning, but the change in a week is unbelievable and I didn’t think I was going to do it and I did.

So thank you again and I look forward to carrying on working with the service to keep my sobriety going as my life is starting all over again.
