About: Northwick Park Hospital

My father suffered a stroke last year and the help provided by the nurses and team of medics was excellent. However, since then my father suffered another stroke, and returning here for the second time things have changed for the worse. I understand Covid is around but to use it as an excuse for everything is annoying. Those isolated and in side rooms should be allowed more time and at least 2 visitors, especially those unable to use phones and similar devices. I understand not having too many visitors but immediate family should be allowed at staggered times or with prior appointments. I called the department and was told someone will call back. I waited for three hours and had to call back to actually get hold of a nurse and was again told the doctor will call back. So much for making things easier for relatives during covid.

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for your post regarding your father, who has had to be admitted again recently due to unfortunately suffering a further stroke.

I was very sorry to hear that the care received on this occasion was not to the standard you recall during your father's admission last year.

I can appreciate the frustration at the restrictions we have in place for visiting at the moment, and how COVID has had to see a change in our ways of working on the wards. We do unfortunately have to have a limit on visitors in order to keep the risk of transmitting the virus as low as possible. At the moment this is limited to one nominated visitor per patient. Exceptions are made where a patient's circumstances should warrant this, for example if they are nearing end of life.

I was also sorry to hear that you have had difficulties hearing back from staff on the ward with updates about your father's condition. The team on the stroke unit do recognise the importance in communicating with families for updates, especially during these times. The restriction in visiting has resulted in an increase in the communication needed with families, and there are times when delays in doing this can occur. I will most certainly share you feedback with the manager for the Stroke unit so that they are aware of what your experience has been and thank you again for taking the time to share it with us.

Kind regards

Peter Hare
