"Friendly staff but explanations could be improved"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Male Medical

(as the patient),

I have been in hospital since Friday, but my problems began on Wednesday when I noticed that my leg had started to tingle and had also gone numb. I called my doctor and was given an appointment for friday morning however I never made it to the appointment as I fell and later learned that I had fractured my ankle.

I phoned for an ambulance twice and after some time the ambulance arrived. I was taken to Daisy Hill and several x-rays were taken of my legs, knees, ankles - everywhere really -  and I have been on the male medical ward ever since.

The nurses are absolutely amazing and the doctors are alright. I had an issue regarding the doctors not explaining what was going on with my treatment and what is going to happen next, they are also hard to understand at times and sometimes they won't talk to you, more talk at you and to their colleagues around them.

I brought this issue to the attention of the students on the Care Opinion team and they then informed the nurses in charge of the ward on my behalf.

The plastic curtains, while I understand are necessary, are a nuisance and make sleeping difficult with the heat they keep in. I also think that the ward would greatly benefit from a fridge for patients to store cold drinks that they may have brought in with them in. Aside from this my stay in hospital has been grand and I know that the nurses and doctors are doing their best.

Hi there, thank you for feeding back your experience. I am sorry that you found the information from the medical staff wasn't explained. I will feed this back to the medics on the ward.

I understand that with the recent heat wave, the plastic barrier curtains keep the heat in but unfortunately with the current spike in Covid, they are a necessity to reduce the potential risk of cross infection.

I take on board your suggestion for a cold drinks fridge for patients. Fridge space is limited at the moment but I will certainly look into this and take the idea forward.

Wishing you a speedy recovery,

John Mc Ateer
