After a fall out walking my dog around 3 weeks ago I was left with a 180 degree twisted angle and dislocated patella. Thankfully someone was able to phone the ambulance for me as I was unable to do so myself. Even though I was lying there for around an hour lacking mobility, when they did arrive the ambulance service was brilliant. They could see I was in complete agony and were able to relieve my pain by giving me Entonox which was really helpful. When I arrived at Daisy Hill I was assessed in the A&E department and was told that I would need to go to Craigavon as I would have to get an operation. Whilst waiting for another ambulance to transport me from DHH to CAH I was given a cubicle in which I was made comfortable and felt safe. After I was lifted by the ambulance I was taken straight to CAH and in for surgery. The doctors in both DHH and CAH took time to explain the procedure of the operation to me and ensured I was informed as to the benefits and risks of the surgery.
Now in recovery for over 2 and a half weeks I am still in a lot of pain, although the nursing staff have been brilliant at trying to manage my pain and get me the relief I need. I am always checked up on and staff make sure I am comfortable in my surroundings which is really reassuring for me as a patient as I know staff really do care. The doctors have been brilliant at keeping me informed with regards to my care and treatment plan and have explained everything to me in a way that I am able to understand.
I haven't been able to see any physios just yet but I would like to get started with them soon so I can get back onto my feet again.
The hospital and the staff have been outstanding and I have very little to complain about although one thing in terms of improvements for me personally would be this:
After surgery when I was coming round from the anesthetic I was experiencing hallucinations, this was a terrifying experience for me and these episodes made me forget where and who I was, I would liken this feeling to being a dementia patient. Where my bed is situated there is a glove and apron holder at the bottom of my bed on the wall and during these episodes at points I though this was a monster at the bottom of my bed as the shape of the compartments on this holder look like a scary face. Although it sounds so silly at that time I really believed this thing was a danger to me. I couldn't imagine this constant feeling if I did have dementia or Alzheimer's as the feeling would never wear off and so I think if anything could be improved it would be this.
