"Lack of communication from staff"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Oncology

My husband is currently an inpatient at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.  Despite numerous attempts by phone and in person I have been unable to speak to anyone regarding his care and treatment.

He has cancer and is in Ward 32. When I managed to visit him I asked at the reception desk for his named nurse to come and speak to me. The person I spoke to said they would get the nurse to come and see us. An hour later my visit ended and no one had made any attempt to speak to us.  My husband is deaf so communication can be difficult. He has a bone anchored hearing aid which helps him but in a noisy environment he can have difficulty understanding what people are saying.   

Previous to my visit I had been unable to get through to the ward at all by telephone. Whilst I appreciate that the hospital is very busy the total lack of communication regarding my husbands condition is appalling. He has no idea what is going on, I have no idea what is going on and the only people I have been able to speak to are the Macmillan nurses, both at home and at the hospital. They have been wonderful.  

Please tell the staff who answer the phones not to tell you that someone will call you back if they don't know that someone will be doing that. I waited in for hours two days in a row waiting for a call which I am still waiting 3 days later.  There really should be a much better system for communicating with the hospital.  We live in an age of so called instant communication.  Sadly it has lead to no communication at all. When your nearest and dearest has a terminal condition and you live 35 miles away from the hospital then that is more than enough to think about with having to worry about when, or even if, you will be able to get through on the phone to speak to one of the people looking after him!

I am sorry to hear of your experience in ward 32 and can understand your frustration at the level of communication you received at this difficult time for you and your family. Would it be possible for you to contact me directly or the Senior Charge Nurse in Ward 32 to discuss further and identify where we can offer more support to you.
