"Lack of basic care for elderly patient"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

An elderly, frail relative was admitted to level 7 with a UTI. Despite this, for several days it seemed that she was given no water to drink, even though it was requested and promised.

Similar difficulties with being accompanied to the bathroom/accessing a commode resulting in embarrassing and unhygienic episodes.

Communication was very difficult - impossible to get through to the ward by phone and Patient Liaison service was not effective at all.

A very sad and frightening experience for a vulnerable person - it seems that some hospital staff show very little compassion to those in their care.
