"Staff remained calm and collected which got me through"

About: Maternity care / 2 West Maternity Maternity care / Maternity Admission/Assessment Unit

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I came in for induction and it was busy down there but I was kept fully informed the whole time. The plan of action changed and I had to go to theatre but I was still kept fully informed about everything that was happening. I was really at ease and the staff looked after me so well. My partner was looked after really well too and was given food etc.  The visiting situation is annoying as I would really need my partner with me after being in theatre to help me lift and change my baby etc but I know that this can't be helped due to the pandemic unfortunately. The food is nice and the heat is manageable as I have a fan beside me. It is a nice and quiet ward.

The only thing that I would improve would be the information given and communication in terms of water births. I had hoped for a water birth. It didn't go to plan as I was sectioned but this is what I initially wanted. I had talked to my community midwife about this and I know that you need special water monitors for this procedure. She said that she thought there were 2 of these monitors in Craigavon Area Hospital. I had asked a few others and I was being told yes they do have monitors in this hospital by some staff and then others were saying no. I think that information regarding this should be clearer as many people are probably wanting a water birth. If these water monitors aren't available in this hospital I really think that the hospital should invest in them and make sure they are available in the future.

Nevertheless, I had a traumatic experience but the staff remained calm and collected which got me through it.

Firstly congratulations on the birth of your baby, I hope you are doing well.

Thank you so much for your kind words and comments with regards your care, it was lovely to read that you felt well looked after and that you were fully informed about your care. I am glad that the staff made you feel at ease during what sounds like an extremely stressful situation for you and your partner.

I am sorry that your partner could not stay with you longer following birth, but unfortunately government restrictions remain in place, which we are continuously reviewing.

I am also sorry that you were not informed regarding our underwater monitoring, within our delivery suite we do have underwater monitoring to allow women to labour in the water. I can only apologise that this was not communicated to you.

All the very best for the future to you and your family.

Regards

Mary Dawson
