"There was little to no water offered to me"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I originally came into A& E yesterday but it was so extremely busy. I was so dehydrated in the heat that after 7 hours without being seen I decided to go home and try again tomorrow. There was little to no water offered to me yesterday and nothing available to buy in the shop. When I got home I felt so light headed and dehydrated I drank 2 litres of water. At home I also decided to call an out of hours doctor to see if they might be able to help me but to my surprise there was no doctors available and I could only chat to a nurse, this was extremely unfortunate and I was very very frustrated.

I returned again to A& E early this morning and have been waiting ever since although I have noted that today the staff aren't under as much pressure. I feel there is a great lack of communication between myself and the staff and I have not been regularly updated regarding what's happening with my care. But I do understanding there is a lot of pressure on the system and by looking at the staff around me I know they really are trying their very best to help. Hopefully, I don't need to wait much longer to be seen.

We apologise you had to wait for a long time on both occasions when you attened the emergency department, The department has been under immense pressure these last few weeks, there has been a significant number of patients waiting in ED or admission beds this leads to overcrowding and reduced capacity in ED to see patients in a more timely manner.the Trust is working hard to improve the flow of admission patients out of ED into the admission wards. There are vending machines in the main foyer with drinks and the shop does stock a varied range of products during its opening hours. We hope you are recovering well.
