"Mental health support and autism support"

About: Adult Mental Health Community / Gedling Local Mental Health Team (LMHT) Adult Mental Health Community / Newark & Sherwood Local Mental Health Team (LMHT)

(as a parent/guardian),

I have a son with asbergers syndrome. He has been suffering with his mental health for the past two years. Over the last year and a half he has spent six months in hospital on three different occasions.

He is now living in a flat because we were told by the social worker he would get more support in the community.

Initially when he moved into his flat he had support from framework and the enablement team (for two hours a week) and a mental health nurse. Very quickly (around three weeks) after he came out of hospital, the framework team and enablement team stopped working with him. He only has a deepo jab once a month., and I believe the mental health nurse has very little contact with him.

At no point has the fact that he is on the autistic spectrum been addressed. He has pushed some support away. I know that he struggles socially and mixing with people. This should have been taken into account with providing support for him.

I recently heard about the transformation project in mental health. It is supposed to offer a wrap around person centred approach to treatment. To be honest my son's autism has never been addressed by any of the mental health teams he has worked with. This has really has impacted how affective the treatment is. He has pushed back on much of the treatment he has been offered. Because of this he is living in a flat virtually unsupported.

I was told by his first psychiatrist that mental health support for autistic people in Nottinghamshire is particularly bad.

I think it is only a matter of time before he is readmitted to hospital.

I am writing to you in total disgust for the support my son has been offered.

Dear saturnhg33

I’m sorry to read your feedback regarding your sons care whilst under our Local Mental Health Team. Whenever we receive feedback we try to use it as a learning tool to improve our services further and it would be helpful if you can indicate to us whether this relates to Gedling, Newark & Sherwood or both LMHTs? This way I can direct you to the most relevant person to discuss further.

We have had some deficiencies within Nottinghamshire, in the past, regarding specialist Autistic Spectrum Disorder services, but this has now been addressed and we do provide a service. As a Local Mental Health Team we should be looking at your sons care holistically and taking into account co-morbidities, alongside engaging with carers.

If your son’s care relates to Gedling please do either attempt to speak with the Manager (Sara Lee, Tel: 0115 9524098) directly or contact myself to discuss further if you feel able to. My email address is michael.taylor2@nottshc.nhs.uk

Thank you for leaving feedback and I wish you all the best for the future.

Michael Taylor

Service Manager

Gedling LMHT.
