My mother in law attended A& E at University Hospital Wishaw with an infection in her leg. The staff did not do a full set of observations, a temperature only, and did not properly look at the leg. My mother in law was then questioned and made to feel she shouldn’t have been there. She had been given antibiotics from out of hours but told to attend A&E with any changes as she would need IV antibiotics if it got worse. The member of staff told her she hadn’t given time for the antibiotics to work even though she explained what out of hours said.
My mother in law has bad mental health and explained this to them. She was so anxious that she came home without being seen by a doctor. I called and spoke to the member of staff in charge and was told a full set of observations had been done, this is not the case as my mother in law knows what a BP cuff is and how it works and this wasn’t used. I asked if there would be a place for my mother in law to sit alone to wait as the waiting room was far too busy for her anxiety and it would be in her notes about her mental health issues. They told me that as she wasn’t attending A&E due to her mental health at this time they couldn’t do anything about it. Her mental health was completely discounted. If my mother in law gets worse and becomes septic then the onus for this is on that member of staff and the person in charge. I understand what it is like to work in a busy hospital department but the attitude of these members of staff towards my mother in law is disgusting.
"Poor care"
