"Another waiting list? - no surgeon !"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Oral Surgery & Medicine

(as the patient),

Came into Wishaw General hospital for an appointment. It was a complete waste of time and so unprofessional.

To give you a bit of background I have a underbite. I’ve know this for years (when I was 12) and been thinking long and hard about getting surgery. Now for two years now I’ve wanted to go for surgery. I went to my dentist who referred me to the hospital to see about jaw surgery (this was January last year) of course after that we had the pandemic so services have been delayed.
I got a letter in for an appointment for July 2021. The letter states how I will need x rays and this appointment will take up to 2 hours. When I came into the hospital at the ENT reception a receptionist had no mask on!
Then when I got seen you were lucky I was only there for 10 minutes and was a check up! The consultant gave me information which I already knew about and said they have a major back log and not to mention there has been no surgeon since before the pandemic.
So I’ve to get x rays and molds done which will take another year ! It’s beyond a joke! Another waiting list- seriously !  It’s not like at this stage I need a surgeon to put braces on me!
This is really affecting my mental health I have a jaw which clicks, jaw pain, over lapped teeth which makes me feel self conscious - I don’t want to smile because of it. I feel like this was a complete waste of time and not to mention a risk of health if they wanted a check up and to talk about surgery they could do it on zoom!
I know that the NHS is stretched out due to the pandemic. However, it’s not good enough when I’m suffering from pain day to day and mental health issues because of this.

Dear Sarah161996

I am sorry to read about your recent experience attending OMFS appointment at Wishaw and can sense your frustration at the lack of progress with your treatment which is in part due to COVID and part due to the vacancy we currently have within NHS Lanarkshire for an Orthognathic Surgeon..

I have passed on your comments to Frances Queen, Clinical Nurse Manager within the service. If you would like to contact Frances Queen by email:(Frances.queen@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk) or phone 01698 753460 to discuss this in more detail she would be happy to discuss this with you.

With regard to your concern that the receptionist was not wearing a mask, I have passed on colleagues on the Wishaw site who manage reception staff to highlight your concern.

Kind Regards

Lynn McTavish
