I've had Crohn's disease for about 15 years, which was poorly managed for a good chunk of that time - I was a young teenager who wasn't living with family who were equipped to take care of me or ensure I got to medical appointments etc. It kept getting worse until I was around 20 and the symptoms were unbearable/needing serious treatment. I was only given tramadol and pentasa by my previous consultant who told me that pain was to be expected with a condition like Crohn's disease. That doctor retired and I met Doctor Jafferbhoy.
One appointment with him and he told me to look out for air in my urine after describing my symptoms to him and to contact him immediately if it happened. Lo and behold, two days later I phoned the nurses and Doctor Jafferbhoy had me looked at and booked in for surgery. I've been in remission under his care ever since and I feel like I owe him my life.
My quality of life up til then was awful, I felt like getting on top of my health again was when my life really started. He has always been very kind and empathetic and he's just such a nice, bouncy character who has never dismissed me and always taken my concerns seriously.
Same with the clinical nursing team at Victoria Hospital. Even when I just needed a chat, the nurses had an ear for me and I can't thank them enough. I recently had a brain hemorrhage and when I was worried the stress from it was flaring my Crohn's, Michelle listened to me breaking my heart down the phone over what I'd been through and got tests arranged for me the very next day. I'm 29 now and I dread the day they retire or move on to another venture. I couldn't ask for a better team.
