"Wound care for my mother"

About: Coventry And Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust Hospital Of St Cross / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mother was discharged from rugby hospital on the Friday. The consultant had told her that they completed a referral to the district nursing team to have her wounds cared for as she had blisters and the nurse would do a home visit on the Monday.

On Monday, no wound care nurses came therefore, I called the hospital who stated they couldn't help. I then called the district nursing team who stated they had no referral. I then called GP who sent a referral form to the district nursing team. The first error is that the consultant did not do a referral to the district nursing team.

Tuesday, we got a call from the district nursing team who stated my mother did not meet the criteria and told us to go back to the GP. I went back to the GP who stated they couldn't do a home visit due to insurance and they did another referral to the community nursing team. I called the community nursing team, 2nd point of complaint I spoke to a person who spoke to me in a rude manner, they talked about a relative who recovered well from a similar issue, questioning why my mother wasn't. I told them every patient is different and in the nicest way their relative did not have complications and blisters like my mother did if this call was recorded I suggest it is listened too, as I felt this member of staff rudeness was unbelievable. No one should ever be spoken to like that and I work in healthcare. I found their manner was not caring or responsive & feel like they did not take into account my mother's conditions such as blisters, diabetes and an infection she had.

After 15minutes a member of staff called again to say they reviewed the discharge paperwork and on there it states my mother wound is well and she can go to the GP therefore will not be coming out tomorrow. I reminded her that my mother had an infection in hospital and was taking antibiotics, she had blisters and struggling to walk and she had diabetes putting at her additional risk of infection. This all fell on deaf ears, the nurse confirmed the discharge summary was written by the consultant  this is my 3rd area of complaint that inaccurate medical records were written.

I then called the hospital where the operation took place last week and spoke to the lead nurse who was a stark contrast and very caring and listened. She recalled my mother as she was on charge when she got discharged. She called the community nurse and gave them up to date info.

My 4th complaint issue is that the community nurse called my mother who doesn't have the best grasp of English when I asked all communication should be through me. They told her district won't come out as she should walk and get to the GP.

I am disgusted by the lack of compassion, care and treatment my mother has had. She has been crying in pain and is at greater risk of infection which wasn't taken into account. I would like an apology and review of patients released from hospital with knee replacement and there eligibility for community nursing care.
