"I think I should be further on with treatment"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Craigavon Area Hospital / General Medicine (2 south)

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I arrived to A&E and waited for 22 hours which wasn't pleasant. I was given the first available bed and it wasn't even on a ward that I should have been on. I should have been situated in a gastroenterology ward due to my condition and I should have been being treated by nurses and doctors specialised in this area instead of being on a medical ward.

In terms of the staff in this hospital, the day time nurses have been magnificent. There have been some brilliant night time staff too, however, the other night there was an incident where a nurse spilt my medication all over my bed and the floor. I had to get my bed changed. The nurse completely denied doing this and said that my medication was already in my arm even though it was spilt everywhere. I was meant to receive a high dose of steroids which was essential for me but the nurse argued this and I began to feel unwell and really deteriorated as I was not allowed this medication because they said it was already administered but it definitely wasn't.  I felt far too sick to go to theatre. This would be horrible for a patient who wasn't able to speak for themselves; What if they didn't get the medication that they relied on due to this fault?

The agency nurses that treated me were rough, showing me no compassion and seemed really unfamiliar with the hospital and where everything is stored. They showed no empathy towards me as a patient and I have had many issues with them last summer when I was also in hospital.

The permanent staff here in the hospital are brilliant. This hospital provides a high standard of care but the agency nurses who treated me were not providing the standard needed.

The bank nurses are really fantastic. It is lovely being treated by familiar faces.

Irene is brilliant, smart and kind.  She is heads and shoulders above many in the hospital. She would do anything for you. She even went out of her way to treat a patient at 4am. She is amazing.

Louise who is the sister of the ward is also fantastic. She would honestly do anything for you. She is so caring.

Kerrie and Jan have been amazing too.

I am very grateful to be part of this healthcare system. I was seen by 5 consultants within 2 days which is fantastic. The consultants are brilliant people.

The ENT department are really good and approachable.

There has been a lack of communication during my stay. I was meant to get a scan and I asked 3 times throughout 2 days whether I was getting it or not. The answer was no. I then asked if I was getting a scan did I need to fast, the answer was no. I had my breakfast in the morning and 10 minutes later I was brought out for a scan even though they had told me I wasn't getting it. This meant that there was a 6.5 hour delay due to the lack of communication. I work in healthcare and know the procedure of fasting before scans etc however I shouldn't be thinking about how I should be treated when I'm here, I should be fully cared for.

It is a disgrace that I have had 10 cannulas inserted in the last few days. 5 of them failed.  A staff member had only tried this procedure a couple of times as practise before trying it on me as a patient. They attempted both hands and left a massive bruise the whole way up my forearm which was tender for days. They were never getting it in.

I also wanted the drip to be inserted into me at a slightly slower speed as this is the only way it works for me. The nurses were doing this but the doctor said they shouldn't have been doing it this way and told them a different way to do it.

I should be on a low residue diet however they have told me that they only provide this a few days during the week.  The food is very repetitive and yoghurts never seem to be available.

This side of the ward has a quiet and nice environment. I am content but I think I should be further on with treatment.

Thank you for your post. I am sorry to read that you have had trouble ordering yoghurts, unfortunately we encountered ordering / delivery issues, but this has now been resolved. I am also sorry that you were wrongly advised that low residue diets are only available during the week, the catering department will always strive to provide the correct nutritional needs for our patients. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss further.

Dear Chafs65 - Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback.

I apologise that your experience has fallen below gold standard and that communication within the ward has been found lacking. Our aim is to deliver excellence in care through consistent caring and compassionate behaviours and clearly this would not appear to have been the case for you.

I have shared your concerns with both the medical and nursing teams, and I have actioned a plan to ensure a more robust communication pathway is in place.

With regards to your concerns surrounding Agency nursing staff, If you would like to contact me directly to provide me with further information, please be assured this incident will be investigated and dealt with accordingly.

We have sourced the Low Residue menus for all days and staff have been updated in the process of obtaining these.

It reassures me that not all of your experience was poor and that many of the staff have delivered high quality nursing care that you have been happy with throughout your stay.

Trudi Kelly

Ward sister
