"Early Pregnancy Unit"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I attended EPU for an early scan due to recurrent miscarriages, two staff members brought me to scan room, they asked my dates and I was 100% certain of them due to treatment but they argued I was wrong. They began to scan but they didn't seem to know how to work the machine. The told me it's too early for a heartbeat and that to come back next week, my husband asked for a doctor but was told none was available.

They refused contact doctor to get me medication recommended as they didn't see a heartbeat. I contacted my consultant and explained but they still refused the medication.

So the following week I see the same staff again an and same thing happens again except I insisted on a doctor who found heartbeat within a few seconds, still no consultant available to write script for my medication, after several calls and emails I still didn't receive meds I was told I would.

Went for scan following week to receive the sad news that our baby had stopped growing, requested a doctor and my consultant just happened to be there, they confirmed same and rubbed my bare leg inappropriately in an attempt to console me.

We were them placed in a room where we could hear another couple being scanned. I had a D&C and cannot fault staff who I dealt with but the care in the EPU I have received over the past few years is nothing short of disgusting, I have highlighted it before but it seems clear that lessons have not been learnt.

Absolutely no aftercare offered after a D&C and no mental or emotional support offered or any guidance as to how to avail of it.

encourage people to share their experiences of health and social care, what matters to you, what you particularly liked or disliked so that we can share with the relevant department, and staff .

Hello DerryGirl 123

Thank you for sharing this at a difficult time for you and your husband. I would like to offer my condolences.

Your feedback has been passed onto the Ward Sister who is making a few enquiries with the staff in EPU and will respond to you directly once she has received the information.

Regards

Vi Gray
