"My attendance to Minor Injuries and X-ray."

About: South Tyrone Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit South Tyrone Hospital / Radiology

(as a service user),

I had reason to attend the Minor Injuries Unit. I took a tumble in the garden and hurt my wrist. My husband advised me to go to Dungannon Minor Injuries. We arrived in the afternoon and my husband waited outside. I was greeted by a lovely nurse called Rosemary. I was advised it was appointment only and given a number to call. I rang and was given an appointment 2 hours after that. No problem, we hadn’t realised it was appointment only but that was fine and understandably with the covid situation, and it did appear very busy at that time. We headed off home and came back again, I was taken straight away by another lovely nurse called Tracey. After looking at my wrist I was sent for an xray. I was a little confused as to where to book in for xray and where I was to wait for the xray however I did not have long to wait and the Radiographer (I did not get her name) was also very friendly and caring. I was then taken back into the minor injuries in less than 5 minutes. During that short wait I observed a man giving, what I saw as,  complete abuse and shouting at a member of the nursing staff. The behaviour I observed was disgraceful and I wanted to intervene but the staff member kept calm and professional. I was called back in by Tracey and I am lucky that I had not broke anything. My wrist is feeling a lot better already. All in all 10/10 experience. All staff I encountered were excellent and professional. Despite not knowing about it, the appointment system is excellent.

Dear Sorcha5272 - thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback and for your kind words which we will share with both Rosemary one of our staff nurses and Tracey the emergency nurse practitioner (ENP).

Our Minor Injury Unit service moved to appointments as part of the regional rebuilding of services to reduce overcrowding in clinical areas and waiting rooms in November 2020, this was communicated through local newspapers and the Trusts social media., however we understand that not everyone will know about this change.

Unfortunately our staff will occasionally get abuse with people shouting at them which is not what anyone would want in their work.

We are glad to read that you had such a positive experience and we hope your wrist is healing well.

Best wishes

Paul Smyth
