"Recent hysterectomy using a new technique"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I have suffered from gynaecological issues for nearly 30 years and experienced so much pain that affected my life in so many ways. At last it had been decided that I could have a hysterectomy and was put on a waiting list. Around 4 weeks ago, I was in the park with my son after school and I received a phone call, that set me on an amazing journey of healing and recovery.

Dr. Lindsay from Glasgow Royal infirmary called saying she was using a new robotic technique and asked if I'd participate. From the 1st time I spoke with her I felt confident that she really was trying to make the experience of women with gynaecological issues better. She was knowledgeable, reassuring and made time to listen and was open to questions.

When I was admitted this week the treatment from all staff was excellent they were friendly,  efficient and happy to listen.

When I was taken to the operating theatre,  I shared the lift with Dr. Lindsey and Dr. Kent my surgical team, who were chatty and kind, it made the experience feel more normal and relaxed.  This new way of working made me feel included and that I was actively involved in my treatment and care.

Dr. Lindsay and Dr. Kent showed me pictures of the robot,  explained what would happen and were happy to discuss the pros and cons ( no real cons, just the usual risks).

After my operation they made sure they visited me to see how I was too and to explain the surgery. For over 20 years,  I've had symptoms of endometriosis and 2 laparoscopys didn't find it, I have been dismissed many times and has been suggested that it was in my head. Dr. Lindsay was able to tell me there was evidence of endometriosis there, whilst its late in the day now, I felt vindicated and took comfort in the fact I did actually have it.

The robotic technique means a quicker healing and recovery,  whilst its very early days and I'm still experiencing pain,  I was able to get up and walk for a short while less than 24 hrs after the operation. All the nursing and support staff, in ward 56 Gynaecology,  were excellent,  so kind and caring.

Dr. Lindsay and Dr.Kent also spoke to me before my discharge and were again happy to discuss my ongoing recovery.

I can't tell you how amazing it is to have 2 trail blazing women operate on me, who have and are devoting their time into making better experiences and outcomes for women who need gynaecology surgery.

I am the proud 9th recipient of the robotic technique and I wish Dr. Lindsay and Dr. Kent well with the future work and can't thank them enough.
