"Sedation procedure"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I was expecting sedation process be actioned before I went into the room for my procedure in order for it to work properly. Mouth guard was put in, Sedation was given and straight after procedure of endoscopy commenced. It put me into panic mode and evidently caused alot of discomfort and pain. Procedure was then rushed all I could hear was "keep still! " Until it was over. Made me cry and I was coughing loads after. I was taken into I believe the recovery room, cannula taken out and my situation explain. my husband was then telephoned to collect me from ward. Just over an hour for the whole experience, this is not stated in the aftercare booklet as states longer recover time.

Dear Displayed

Sorry to hear that your experience of your Endoscopy with us caused you such discomfort and distress. It would be very helpful to know which hospital site it was so that we can discuss this with the staff.

Sedation is not given until the patient is in the procedure room – this is a safety requirement. I am sorry that you felt the procedure was rushed and you were not given explanations of what was going on and this caused panic. I will ensure that all of our endoscopy units are aware of your comments.

If you would like to discuss this further in person please contact our PALS Dept on 01522 707071 and they can put you in contact with me

All the very best and thank you for taking the time to give us feedback – it helps us improve the experience for future patients.

Diagnostic Matron
